Thank you to the countless volunteers, advocates, Election Day workers, and voters who took part in our election. You helped Maryland make history last night. Although, like many, I am left disappointed and concerned by the Nationwide results last night. I spent the first portion of my career helping to elect women to office and now as President of the Women’s Legislators of Maryland, my heart aches that we are not waking up in a nation that will see its First Woman President.
Here in Maryland, the votes are still being counted, and the election results have not yet been certified. However, Maryland and Anne Arundel County have made remarkable progress in this election.
In Congressional District 3, we elected an amazing legislator, and my partner for the last four and a half years serving District 30A, Congresswoman-Elect Sarah Elfreth. She has been an incredible advocate for the Chesapeake Bay, fought tenaciously to bring money home to our District, and since being elected in 2018 has been one of Maryland’s hardest-working State legislators. Thanks to your work, she will join Senator-Elect Angela Alsobrooks, which adds two women to Maryland’s Federal Delegation for the first time since 2017.
We elected Angela Alsobrooks as Maryland’s next United States Senator, becoming the first Black woman to ever represent Maryland in the Senate. Today, women and girls around the Country see a new U.S. Senator who looks like them and who they can look to for inspiration. Now more than ever, we need an inspiring leader like Senator-Elect Alsobrooks, and come January, I look forward to being able to call her my Senator.
We showed the Country, by nearly a 3-1 margin, that Maryland is and will be a safe place for women’s health care and reproductive rights for all people. Maryland has now protected access to abortion care by enshrining it in our state constitution.
On the Anne Arundel County Board of Education, we elected candidates like Dr. Joanna Bache Tobin, Dana Schallheim, Erica McFarland, Sarah McDermott, and Gloria Dent who believe in high-quality investments in our public schools while also providing a safe environment for our students to thrive. Together, we made an affirmative choice about the future of the public schools that we want our children to learn and grow in.
Rest assured, in Maryland, we have incredible leaders in Governor Moore, Speaker Jones, and Senate President Ferguson. We have a fantastic Federal Delegation strengthened by its new additions, and we have incredible citizens who make this State great. Together, we will continue to lift every voice. There is a lot of work to be done, and in some ways, the work has gotten harder, but I trust that Maryland will continue to help lead our Country toward a vision for the future that improves and respects everyone's lives. I can’t wait to partner in that work, with you.
“For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die.” - Senator Ted Kennedy
