Maryland voters decisively chose to protect reproductive freedom in the Maryland
Constitution during this past election, but our work is only beginning. Even if Congress
does not enact a federal abortion ban, the incoming Trump Administration and
Republican-controlled Congress are expected to impose restrictions with the intent to
eliminate reproductive autonomy nationwide and target states that are fighting to protect
reproductive freedom, like Maryland.
These national threats are exactly why we need the strongest possible elected leaders
in our state legislature. With the election of current State Senator Sarah Elfreth (D-30) to
the United States Congress, the Anne Arundel County Democratic Central Committee
will nominate a new state senator to fill her seat. Delegate Dana Jones (District 30A) is
the best qualified candidate to put in that chair and be ready to safeguard Maryland on
Day One of the Trump Administration and new Congress.
Delegate Jones has consistently demonstrated the strong leadership our state will need
as we face unprecedented attacks at the national level to reduce access to reproductive
health services. The reproductive freedoms Marylanders voted for will not survive the
next four years without leaders who are 100% committed to our cause. Delegate Jones
voted for the Abortion Care Access Act of 2022. She helped lead the effort to override
Governor Hogan’s veto of that bill. She understands the gravity of the U.S. Supreme
Court’s decision to destroy 50 years of precedence in protecting bodily autonomy with
its Dobbs decision.
We need Delegate Jones because she will be present in the Senate every day, just as
she has been present for every single vote impacting reproductive freedom while
serving in the House of Delegates. She understands that it’s not just the vote on big bills
that count; it’s fighting against the countless and unrelenting attacks and their
cumulative effect on our freedoms. As a member of the House Appropriations
Committee leadership, she has fought off attack after attack on Medicaid funding for abortion, Maryland’s Abortion Care Clinical Training Program, and the privacy and
safety of people seeking abortion care.
President-Elect Trump has vowed to launch his attack on reproductive freedom on his
very first day in office. By February, just weeks from now, we can expect a coordinated
campaign to severely restrict, if not eliminate, access to abortion care by the Trump
Administration and Congress. The Maryland General Assembly will need to stand up to
these attacks by voting for proactive legislation and a budget that defends and supports
our freedoms.
Delegate Jones is the right person to represent District 30 in the Maryland Senate
during this time of extreme peril in Washington, D.C. We need a District 30 Senator with
a 100% voting record for reproductive freedom. We need a District 30 Senator with
commitment and a track record of working with the Governor, legislative colleagues,
and most importantly the community, in defending our rights.
We are urging the Democratic Central Committee to nominate Dana Jones to the
District 30 seat. Given what we are facing, this vote may be the most important decision
made by the Arundel County Democratic Central Committee in our lifetime to protect
reproductive freedom.
