Maryland Educator Shortage Reduction Act

Maryland's schools have been facing record vacancies, and last week Governor Wes Moore signed the Maryland Educator Shortage Reduction Act that addresses this problem head on.
I was excited to co-sponsor HB 1219, which addresses the educator vacancies in Maryland’s schools by establishing the Teacher Development and Retention Program as a pilot initiative to encourage college students to pursue teaching careers. The pilot program will help recruit more diverse teachers by providing stipends for students enrolled in a teacher preparation course at certain HBCUs. The bill also enhances existing programs to recruit and retain new educators, including expanding existing teacher scholarships and reforming the way we qualify childcare providers.
