⚾Leading in the Legislature and on the Field!

March 8, 2024

Dear Neighbor,

Legislative Wins for 30A!

✔️✔️This past week two more legislative wins passed the House this morning with nearly unanimous bipartisan support!!

⛵- HB 256 will work to develop an innovative emergency alert system for Maryland’s waterways, helping to improve safety for all on the water! Our jewel of the Chesapeake Bay is an amazing resource and place of recreation for people across Maryland. While we have some of the best emergency response times, on-the-water emergencies present additional response hazards, and lives can be saved by alerting boaters already on the water. Maryland needs to determine how we can best alert people of emergencies or hazards that may be taking place on our waterways. HB 256 will work with a group of key stakeholders to determine the best system to keep Marylanders safe and informed on the water!

🐚- HB 857 will allow harvest hour flexibility for Shellfish aquaculture businesses in Maryland, helping to make Maryland open for aquaculture! As the House member of the Aquaculture Coordinating Council, graciously appointed by Speaker of the House Adrienne Jones, I'm charged with advancing Maryland’s Aquaculture industry throughout Maryland. There are incredible businesses up and down the Chesapeake Bay that help improve our environment while providing oysters that we all love. HB 857 will help provide needed flexibility to our aqua-culturists during the shortened summer harvest window to make these vital small businesses more economically viable!

Focusing on Families: Health & Social Services Subcommittee

This past week, I'm very proud to have chaired a Health and Social Services subcommittee briefing! We heard from the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange, The Child Support Administration, and The Office of Home Energy Programs, and drilling down on their budgets to maximize their benefit to Maryland families! Throughout the session, we have heard from numerous departments that provide vital services in our State. As we near the completion of the budgetary process, I look forward to working with my colleagues in HSS and Appropriations to support these programs while maintain fiscal responsibility.

If you have any questions about the budget process, please feel free to contact my office at dana.jones@house.state.md.us

Leading Ladies & Empowerment at the Plate!

It's always going to be a good time when America's largest caucus of Women Legislators visits the Governor's mansion! Thank you so much to Governor Moore and the First Lady for hosting the caucus, and sharing his appreciation and outlook for our continued partnership.

I also want to highlight an amazing Maryland woman honored this week!!

A trail blazer in her profession, and in Major League Baseball, Nicole Sherry has been the head groundskeeper for the Baltimore Orioles since November 2006. She is one of only 2 women in MLBs history to be a head groundskeeper. She has been recognized as a prominent national leader in her field and Mrs. Sherry is a role model in our State for women and girls looking to pursue careers that traditionally have been male dominated. If you go to an Oriole's game this Spring, and you see that amazing natural grass field, please remember the incredible person behind this Maryland icon!

I was proud to stand alongside my amazing Women's Legislators Caucus colleagues and honor her on the House Floor this week! #LetsGoO's

Imagination Unleashed: Celebrating Read Across America Day!

📚Supporting children's literacy is not just about teaching children to read; it's about opening doors to new worlds, fostering imagination, and building a foundation for lifelong learning and success. I am so appreciative to @Maryland State Education Association and Big Bird for celebrating #ReadAcrossAmerica Day.

💙This year I donated, "The Monster at the End of This Book" starring Grover. We read this book no less than a thousand times with our son, every single time laughing harder, always ending with "AGAIN! AGAIN!" The very sight of this book brings back the best memories of our early literacy days.

What are your favorite books to read with your children?

Women’s History Month Kickoff!

Throughout the month of March and Women’s History month, we will be recognizing individuals who have made an impact on the State of Maryland and Annapolis, and uplift the influential women who inspire us. Today I want to recognize and celebrate Sarah V. Jones, the first Black woman superintendent of all Colored Anne Arundel County Public Schools!

Jones ensured that students of color in Anne Arundel County received high-quality education and had equal opportunities for success. She only hired highly educated teachers and required them to have a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree, allowing students of color to learn from some of the most qualified teachers in the county.
