šŸ“– Book Drive ~ HUGE Success šŸ“–

June 23, 2023

Dear Neighbor,

Thank you all for the outpouring of support for my book drive benefiting the Stanton Community Center! My office was overwhelmed by your generosity! So many books were donated that I was able to also donate to the Annapolis Juneteenth Festivalā€™s Watoto Village for kids AND The Lighthouse Shelter!

The Stanton Center is a wonderful facility and has provided enriching programs for underserved families and children in the City of Annapolis for generations.

Thanks to your support, the Stanton Center has new books for which children and young adults

can choose to read at the Center, or to take home and keep!

Books have a lasting impact on childrenā€™s lives. Thank you again for making this book drive a resounding success!

I cannot thank you enough for your generous donations to children throughout Annapolis and Anne Arundel County!

In Memoriam

In the wake of last week's senseless gun violence, I urge everyone to come together, support one another, and show kindness and compassion to those who have been affected. A Candlelight Vigil was held this past Sunday at the Maryland State House and City Dock in Annapolis, members of the Annapolis community joined in honoring the lives of Nicholas Mireles, Mario Mireles Ruiz, and Christian Marlon Segovia. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and show solidarity to the families that have been impacted.

Summer at the LibraryšŸ“š

Since 1948, AACPL has held a reading challenge in an effort to engage readers of all ages and foster literacy and learning even in the summer months outside of school. Studies show that, on average, students will lose about 25% of their reading and math gains from the previous school year if they are not engaged in some sort of learning activity over summer vacation.

This summer Anne Arundel County Public Library Discoveries team is hosting pop-up libraries throughout the summer. This is the perfect opportunity to sign up for your free library card or check out a library book.

At the library, they make this easy and fun by working learning into their annual Summer Quest ā€“ a free game where participants of all ages can choose their daily reading or learning goal and earn prizes by reaching milestones throughout a 40-day period. The Quest is available in both English and Spanish so that all can play. Iā€™ve been a participant with my son for years, and we look forward to it every summer! To sign up and see full details, please visit their Summer @ Your Library page.

Celebrating Annapolis High Schoolā€™s Unified Sports Team

Congratulations to Annapolis High School for being one of just five high schools in the nation to be honored by ESPN and the Special Olympics as a Special Olympics Unified Champion School! This honor is given to select schools who ensure all students with disabilities are welcome and actively included as members of their community. I was honored to meet with the Annapolis High School Unified Sports Team, who truly embody the national standards of excellence in inclusion, advocacy, and respect on and off the field. Thank you for the visit, you all make our community proud!
